Liverpool set new UK Twitter record

Hold on to your hats: the UK has a new Twitter record courtesy of Liverpool’s game against Dortmund in the Europa League last week.

The club are reporting that their last minute winner against the German side is officially the most-tweeted about moment in the country for 2016 so far.

Twitter’s data states that 56,000 tweets per minute were sent when the full time whistle went. Second in the list for this year is Dejan Lovren’s winning goal during the game, which came in injury time at the end of the second half. 53,000 tweets per minute were sent when he scored.

More than 2 million tweets were posted about the match, with the tie trending around the world showing the global fanbase of both teams.

The volume of tweets sent about the game is another example of the importance of sport to Twitter.
