Fans to decide colour of Wembley arch this weekend

Football fans have a unique opportunity to decide the colour of the Wembley arch this week as part of the build up to the weekend’s Capital One Cup Final between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Football League is tracking the use of two designated hashtags on Twitter this week – #ChelseaAtWembley and #SpursAtWembley – with the hashtag that receive the most use before 6pm on Saturday declared the winner. Once a winner has been decided, the stadium’s world famous arch will be lit up in that colour the night before the final. The campaign’s overall hashtag is #OwnTheArch.

Updates are being issued throughout the week on the @CapitalOne_Cup Twitter account, and the current results will be shown on the arch itself from Thursday. This isn’t just limited to fans of either club: anyone is invited to share the hashtag and join in the vote.

Drew Barrand, Marketing Director at The Football League, said:

“The Football League is always looking at innovative ways to bring fans closer to the action and this vote really does allow fans to play a visible part in the build up to the Final. We are delighted to be able to be able to bring this unique first to Wembley and are looking forward to seeing what colour the arch will be”.

Alex Trickett, Head of Sport, Twitter UK, added:

“Twitter is the place where people come to share in the biggest moments in the football calendar, in fact eight of the 10 most-Tweeted-about UK moments in 2014 were football-related. It will be incredible to see fans from the UK and around the world reaching for their devices to light up the Wembley arch this weekend.”

Lighting up the arch isn’t the only social media activity being undertaken each week, as the Capital One Cup’s official Facebook page is inviting supporters to submit motivational messages for the two teams. One message for each team will be selected to be displayed in the tunnel and will be the last thing the players see before they take to the pitch.

Finally, if you can’t make it the game itself you can have your photo displayed on the giant screens at Wembley by posting a #FinalSelfie on either Instagram or Twitter.
